HERO Academic Advisor/Instructor

POSITION DESCRIPTION
Here Everyone Reaches Optimal Outcomes (HERO) is an ARP ESSER program under the Mid-Atlantic Equity Consortium (MAEC), funded through the Maryland State Department of Education. The Academic Advisor/Instructor (ESL) will assist in the development and implementation of the operations of the after-school program for youth in HERO. The Academic Advisor/Instructor will report to the Program Director. The program will serve 45 students ranging from grades 6-8 at Buck Lodge Middle School in Adelphi, MD. Note – This is a part-time employment position. The current work hours are Monday, Tuesday or Thursday, and Friday 3:30-5:30pm EST, two hours a day, for a total of six hours a week. Due to the potential of school building closures due to COVID-19, the after-school program may be held on a virtual platform, so the schedule and hours are subject to change. We will continue to monitor Prince George’s County Public School systems. This is a non-academic year-long position with the possibility of extension.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES (INSTRUCTIONAL)

  • Advises and mentors students to support their academic achievement.
  • Keeps record of student academic progress.
  • Communicates with students’ school day teacher for synergy of academic achievement.
  • Develops lesson plans and submit them to the HERO Program Director for review weekly, according to the weekly submission schedule.
  • Develops creative core content subject area enrichment activities and implements them in hands-on, interactive, and fun ways.
  • Instructs students in alignment with Maryland State Standards for ELA and Math.
  • Maintains a growth mindset classroom culture where learning is encouraged and framed as a skill to be acquired.
  • Monitors and evaluates students’ development and adjusts instructional content based on the academic needs of the students.
  • Tracks employment hours and submits timesheets on a monthly basis, and on time, according to the schedule established by the HERO Program Director.
  • Establishes and maintains ongoing communication between families to ensure a wraparound services approach to students’ growth and development.
  • Provides the support and guidance necessary to each child and their family, especially regarding English language acquisition to ensure that the program’s elements are introduced and adhered to and that there is qualitative and quantitative evidence of each student’s growth and development.
  • Attends and participates in all HERO staff meetings and professional development trainings.
  • Establishes and maintains communication with members of the school staff about student needs and their connectivity to the various aspects of the after-school program.
  • Develops positive relationships with other in-school and after-school teachers, parents, and youth.
  • Maintains an overall professional personal appearance as a representative of the program, school, and organization.
  • Assists students with their Math, and/or ELA homework and with general academic coursework during their Academic and Homework Time.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

  • In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Teacher certification in ESOL.
  • English-Spanish bilingualism.
  • Prior teaching experience, or experience in pre-teen, teen, and youth development, education, social work, or a related field.
  • Prior experience working with at-risk youth.
  • Ability and willingness to be a team player.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Access to stable internet connection.

PREFERRED

  • Dual certification in English Language Arts/ESOL or Math/ESOL.
  • Highly Qualified Teacher status as categorized by the Prince George’s County Public Schools.
