Parenting Strategies with Dr. Shaffer

On Wednesday, March 18th, 2020, my family and I were out to dinner with my six year-old son and his friend’s family. One day later, Gov. Newsom, CA, issued the first “stay at home” order. He asked Californians to make a huge sacrifice in order to “flatten the curve.” Many states issued the same order. We are now in the seventh week of California’s quarantine. Across the country, Americans and our global community are living in, and trying to adapt to, the “New Normal.”

As a child psychologist, I have been hearing these kinds of questions from parents and caretakers:

  • How do I create a routine for my child while they’re at home?
  • How do I teach my child with special needs? Are there tools or resources out there for us?
  • How do I facilitate social connections for my child during the age of social and physical distancing?

MAEC asked me to offer practical parenting strategies to assist you and your family to get through these challenging times. Let us know if you have questions about managing your child’s challenging behavior(s), helping your child continue to learn and grow, or balancing your needs with those of your children. These questions may be addressed in MAEC’s weekly Learning at Home newsletters or The Family Room webinars (signup here) and the answers will also be posted here. Please remember – we are in this together.

I, Seth Shaffer, Psy.D. (PSY 27492), am a licensed psychologist in the State of California. I work in outpatient clinical settings, and provide therapy to children, adolescents, and families.

Mid-Atlantic Equity Consortium (MAEC) has hired me to share general school related parenting strategies for families affected by COVID-19. The information I provide in the MAEC webinars or website newsletters is not a mental health service or therapy. Sharing the information does not establish a therapist-client professional or confidential relationship between me and any other person who accesses or learns of the information. All information shared is based solely on my knowledge, expertise, and clinical training. But it is not intended to be a clinical mental health service or therapy for a specific person or circumstance.

Any viewer/participant who believes that they may be experiencing psychological distress or symptoms should consult a local mental health professional right away. They may consider calling the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) 24/7 National Hotline (1-800-662-4357) or another reputable referral organization for help.

I have no conflict of interest with any organization or entity mentioned in MAEC presentation and subsequent MAEC webinars.
