About the Family Engagement Assessment Tool (FEAT):
- Research shows that family engagement is critical to students’ success, in and out of school. How well do your school or district’s current efforts reflect and respond to the needs and contexts of your school community?
- MAEC developed the Family Engagement Assessment Tool (FEAT) to help districts and schools critically examine the policies, programs, and practices that shape family-school relationships. While a traditional organizational needs assessment may include family engagement as a component, like MAEC’s Equity Audit, this tool makes family engagement the primary focus.
- The FEAT includes nine targeted questionnaires that are designed to be used in a variety of settings, from individual reflection to school-wide committees. The assessment can be completed through consensus-based discussion or distributed as a survey, with aggregate responses analyzed to reveal trends. We recommend including diverse voices throughout the process, including families, administrators, teachers, staff, students, and community partners.
- As with all of MAEC’s tools, this assessment offers a starting point. Once initial data are gathered, deeper inquiry and additional data collection may be necessary to understand the full range of family experiences.
