Breaking Down Barriers to Effective K-12 Leadership

MAEC has learned that lasting change in schools depends on strong leadership at every level. Parents, teachers, staff, school administrators, and district administrators all play a part.
After our 30+ years in the field, we have learned that school communities can succeed when these elements are in place:
- Resources: Funding and people-power is necessary to prioritize systems-wide change.
- MAEC’s services offered through federal grants, including CEE, CAFE, and CEFAM, are free to school districts in certain states, removing the cost barrier for many communities.
- Leadership and support:
- District buy-in and follow-through
- Leadership teams that reflect the students and families that they serve
- Clear understanding and assessment of how school policies and practices affect students and families differently
- Organization and culture:
- Consistent policy implementation
- Accountability
- Ongoing, relevant professional development for educators
- Culture that does not perpetuate fear of retaliation
