In Memoriam: Dr. Zollie Stevenson
Dear MAEC community,
It is with great sorrow that we share that Dr. Zollie Stevenson passed away on July 8, 2022.
Zollie was a member of the Center for Education Equity (CEE) Advisory Board and a staunch supporter of MAEC for more than two decades, as well as a dear friend, civil rights activist, and education giant. He created good trouble throughout his career, starting as a Title I teacher in his home state of North Carolina, advocating for stronger parental policy and programs at the U.S. Department of Education, and educating young minds in his multiple professorships at Bowie State University, Howard University, and Philander Smith College. It was my great privilege to serve with Zollie on the CEE Advisory Board and Bowie State University’s School of Education Board of Directors, and always learn from him. As my friend and CEE Advisory Board Member Arnie Fege puts it, “Zollie was not only a friend, but also a brother and soulmate who was always there for his many colleagues.”
Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones as we celebrate the good Zollie Stevenson brought into the world and the legacy he leaves for all of us to continue the fight for educational equity.
