MAEC names new Vice President, Dr. Karmen Rouland
MAEC is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Karmen Rouland as our new Vice President.
“I look forward to supporting and continuing the long history and legacy of MAEC as a leader in social justice and equity in education,” Dr. Rouland said. “As we prepare for the next 30 years and beyond, my focus will be on supporting our President and our staff members in the work that we do while staying true to our mission.”
Dr. Rouland has worked in educational settings for more than 15 years, serving with MAEC for the past five years as the Director of Programs and Delivery for the Collaborative Action for Family Engagement (CAFE) and the Center of Educational Equity (CEE). As Director of Programs and Delivery, she oversaw the execution of two multimillion-dollar programs, while providing technical assistance and training on civil rights and educational equity issues. Prior to joining MAEC, Dr. Rouland worked at the intersection of education policy and data at the District of Columbia Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) and at Howard University as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow studying the role of HBCUs in diversifying the K-12 teacher pipeline.
“As a leader, Karmen is both inspirational and aspirational, a great team player and self-initiator. She is optimistic, bright, and wonderful to work with. Karmen exemplifies what it means to practice the core values of the organization, and I’m thrilled to have her as a partner,” said MAEC President, Susan Shaffer.
Dr. Rouland’s leadership extends beyond MAEC. In addition to teaching undergraduate and graduate-level education courses for pre-service and in-service teachers, she is an active participant with Leadership Montgomery CORE, a board member of Girls Prep, Inc., and a co-Troop Leader with her daughter’s Girl Scout Troop.
MAEC’s growth and new leadership provide an opportunity to build capacity in our work to increase equity for K-12 students. With Dr. Rouland’s appointment to Vice President, we are renewed in our efforts to build a world of justice, equity, and well-being.
