Communications Specialist


Equity in education and social justice are at the heart of everything we do at MAEC. For over 25 years we have promoted equitable education for all students, regardless of race, gender, national origin (English Learners), sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, or religious beliefs. MAEC achieves this through a variety of programs. Among them is the Center for Education Equity, a regional center that works with schools and districts at the K-12 level. We also operate a Statewide Family Engagement Center in Maryland and Pennsylvania, Collaborative Action for Family Engagement, which builds educator-family partnerships to support student learning.


MAEC is seeking a Communications Specialist with demonstrated passion for and knowledge of social justice issues to join our team and expand our capacity to communicate and engage with digital audiences. The individual will report to the Director of Communications and be a key player in the development, implementation, and evaluation of content, tools, and strategies to grow MAEC’s digital footprint. The individual will have professional experience with different communication areas, including website and resource management, social media, and content marketing. The successful candidate has strong writing skills, expertise in cross-channel digital engagement strategies, and the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders. Project management experience required; experience with building online communities a plus.


  • Develop and manage MAEC’s website resource platform and online community:
  • Establish strong working relationships with external clients and consultants;
  • Create content to market materials and platform;
  • Lead research and implementation of technological solutions for community building;
  • Evaluate and design strategies for optimal platform marketing;
  • Manage project deliverables, written reports, and other client/funder requirements.
  • Contribute to overall digital strategy including social media, content marketing (e.g., managing organizational newsletter), and website development;
  • Assist with publications, including writing and editing;
  • Track and interpret performance metrics for digital campaigns and properties to measure effectiveness;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required skills and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, Marketing or related field and at least 5 years of work experience;
  • Knowledge of current K-12 education issues, especially as related to civil rights, equity, access, and opportunity;
  • Excellent writing skills and experience writing engaging content for digital platforms;
  • Strong computer and technology competence. Experience with WordPress and email marketing (Constant Contact, Robly) required;
  • Demonstrated ability to plan strategically and prioritize time in dynamic environment;
  • Experience managing successful projects;
  • Ability to independently draft content that requires limited editing;
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate across groups;
  • Demonstrated commitment to MAEC’s guiding principles.

Preferred skills and experience: 

  • Master’s degree;
  • Knowledge of Continuous Improvement (CI);
  • Experience with building online communities;
  • Experience with graphic design;
  • Experience communicating with educators;
  • Experience writing about social justice issues and/or current K-12 education issues.
