Communications Team Intern (K-12 Education Advocate)


MAEC is looking for a graduate or undergraduate intern to support its communications team in areas that may include resource optimization, content development and social media support, and knowledge management around topics related to education equity in K-12 settings. This project-based internship is flexible and will be designed around the Intern’s experiences and interests. The Intern will report to the Content Specialist on the Communications Team. Due to COVID-19, the 2021-2022 internship will be conducted remotely. It has an expected start date in fall 2021 and an expected end date in spring 2022.



This position is open to any of these three areas, based on applicant’s experience and interest:

  1. Resource optimization
  • Support MAEC Content Specialist in reviewing past MAEC resources (webinars, toolkits, publications, etc.) and identifying powerful excerpts
  • Design and create infographics, short videos, one-pagers, and other materials for MAEC website and social media platforms
  1. Content development & social media support
  • Increase informal content development within MAEC (e.g., blogs, interviews with staff, podcasts, etc.)
  • Create dictionary and glossary for style guide
  • Facilitate discussion on social media through Twitter chats, including analyzing weekly social media analytics
  1. Knowledge management
  • Develop and optimize presentation of communications processes within Excel, Google Sheets, or AirTable
  • Facilitate resource-sharing processes within MAEC SharePoint platform


Other duties, as needed.



  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, English, Public Relations, Education, or Communications or related field, or equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Knowledge of current K-12 education issues, especially as related to civil rights, equity, access, and opportunity
  • Research-related analysis and writing experience related to website, social media, publications, and/or webinars
  • Strong oral and written communication skills addressing diverse audiences
  • Outstanding organizational abilities, good judgment, and close attention to detail
  • High level of initiative, professionalism, flexibility, and strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong computer and technology skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher), Google docs, and interest in and ability to learn new platforms



  • Experience using editing software, including InDesign and video editing
  • Experience with document accessibility (WCAG 2.1 compliance)
  • Masters degree or in pursuit of Masters degree
