Communications Associate

ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW:

MAEC was founded in 1992 as an education non-profit dedicated to increasing access to equitable educational opportunities so all students can learn and achieve at high levels. Its mission is to promote excellence and equity in education to achieve social justice. MAEC provides technical assistance and professional training for state department personnel, public school administrators, teachers, and families on a wide range of issues related to equity, including those centered on race, ethnicity, national origin, language, religion, sexual orientation, and gender identity.

As part of its growing portfolio of projects, MAEC operates the Center for Education Equity, which is a technical assistance center funded by the Department of Education, serving the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions, and Collaborative Action for Family Engagement (CAFE), the Maryland and Pennsylvania statewide family engagement center.

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

MAEC is seeking a Communications Associate with demonstrated passion for and knowledge of social justice and education equity issues to join our team and support our capacity to engage with MAEC’s audiences. The individual will report to the Director of Communications & Engagement and be a key player in the development, implementation, and evaluation of MAEC’s website, webinars, newsletters, and social media. The successful candidate has strong technical skills in communications platforms (like WordPress, Canva, and Robly), experience supporting website and newsletter development, and the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide communications support and guidance to MAEC’s CAFE team in relation to webinars, publications, social media, and branding initiatives as the Communications Team Liaison
  • Produce newsletters and webinar alerts through Robly, including overseeing content development, leading research, assembling content into templates, and proofing content
  • Support social media on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram by writing posts, designing promotional graphics and videos on Canva, and implementing social media strategies that support marketing and PR objectives
  • Actively monitor, track, and engage with relevant trending social media topics across all platforms to promote MAEC resources and strengthen MAEC’s digital presence
  • Maintain MAEC, CEE, and CAFE websites by updating homepages, creating new pages when necessary, reviewing old content, and tracking website analytics
  • Support webinars with social media and post-webinar preparation for the website, including editing webinar recordings in Vimeo, uploading the webinar recording and transcript to the website, and coordinating follow-up emails to attendees
  • Maintain mailing lists and any other associated lists and tags
  • Collaborate with Communications Team to execute integrated communications strategy
  • Assist the Director of Communications & Engagement when necessary

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, English, Public Relations, Education, or Communications or related field
  • 1-3 years of experience working in communications or equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Knowledge of current K-12 education issues, especially as related to civil rights, equity, access, intersectional identities, family engagement, and opportunity gaps
  • Proven experience with content management systems like WordPress, AirTable, Hootsuite, Zoom, OneDrive, and Google Analytics
  • Strong editorial and written communication skills addressing diverse audiences
  • Professional experience managing social media accounts
  • Outstanding organizational abilities, good judgment, and strong attention to detail
  • Self-starter and fast learner with high level of initiative, professionalism, flexibility, and strong interpersonal skills
  • Able to produce and edit content on Robly, Canva, Adobe Photoshop and Premiere
  • Mastery of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and their Google equivalents

 

PREFERRED:

  • Bilingual English/Spanish speaker
  • Experience with document accessibility (WCAG 2.1 compliance)
  • Experience with website and resource management
  • Experience with Adobe InDesign

 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: 

Compensation will be commensurate with experience. MAEC offers a competitive benefits package including health, vision, dental insurance, and a 403(b) retirement program.
